Opportunities to visit Bury Grammar School Boys are available all year round. Our formal open events have already taken place but private weekday appointments are available. Please contact the Registrar for further details on 0161 797 2700 or email Mrs Stephanie Brierley email@example.com
Once an application has been made, you will receive an invitation to come to an interview day.
Offers will be based on your interview and based upon your GCSE results.
We look forward to welcoming you and your son to Bury Grammar School Boys!
To enter the Sixth Form at BGSB we require you to have, as a minimum, 5 GCSE passes at Grade B or above. You should aim to achieve an A or A* in the subjects you wish to study at AS level – unless, of course, you choose a subject which you are not currently studying.
From September 2015 there will be some changes to A levels. Although many providers seem a little confused by these changes, we at BGSB have made a firm decision that boys entering the Sixth Form from September 2015 will study 4 stand-alone AS qualifications. This means that boys will take examinations at AS level in all their subjects before, in the main, progressing with 3 of these subjects at A2 level. This offers a unique opportunity for you at BGSB Sixth Form in comparison to local state Sixth Form provision. It also means that you will have an official qualification by September 2016 to use as a basis for UCAS application. We strongly believe that this will offer BGSB Sixth Form students a firm choice in a rather uncertain world and, importantly, give you an advantage when applying to University.
As far as subject choices are concerned, we advise you to discuss your thoughts and plans with your parents and with staff at school. Among the questions you could usefully ask yourself are:
- What subjects do I enjoy?
- What subjects am I good at?
- What are my career aspirations?
- What subjects will keep my options open?
AS and A2 course subjects
There are 26 subjects from which to choose:
- Business Studies
- Classical Civilisation
- Computer Science
- English Language
- English Literature
- Further Maths
- Physical Education
- Psychology – available in BGSG
- Religious Studies
- Systems and Control Technology
- Theatre Studies – available in BGSG
In the L6th you will take AS General Studies – and will be able to choose to take A2 General Studies in the U6th. You will also have the opportunity to study an EPQ in U6th, having discussed your options with Mr Hone, our EPQ Co-ordinator. In both L6th and U6th you will participate in Games on Wednesday afternoons and Activities on Friday afternoons. (Friday afternoon activities are shared with the Girls’ School and include a wide range of options – academic, practical/creative and community service.)
Your week will, therefore, be made up as follows: 34 periods of academic teaching (8 periods for each chosen AS subject and 2 for General Studies.); 3 periods of Games; 2 periods of Activities and 5 private study periods where you can use our superb new Sixth Form Centre. It goes without saying that you will also wish to avail yourselves of the fantastic refectory and social area contained within this new centre at lunch-time and at morning break. It really is an exciting time to join our Sixth Form and make use of our excellent new facilities.
If you have any queries about the Sixth Form at BGSB, or would like to come and visit the school during the working week (Taster Days can be arranged), please do not hesitate to contact our Registrar, Mrs Brierley, E: firstname.lastname@example.org, T: 0161-797 2700. We should be pleased to help in any way we can.
