  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

Information and Communication Technology is expanding rapidly and is an important asset that is relied on increasingly in the day to day running of the world at large. The aim of the ICT curriculum is to give each boy hands-on and practical experience of the computer and its associated hardware.

    Co-ordinator: Mrs J M Harrison BEd

    Outline of work

The scheme of work followed in the Junior School develops specific computer skills as well as personal skills, which include co-operation in group tasks and the exchange of ideas.

ICT finds a place in virtually every area of the school curriculum and boys are required to adapt their computing skills to use in a variety of different tasks. In Science, for example, they may need to understand and manipulate information on screen to explain experiments and results.

The boys are timetabled for one ICT lesson per week. In these lessons the basic ICT skills are covered and include word processing, graphics and use of the internet. These skills are not taught in isolation but in the context of other subjects - eg using the internet to research World War 1 for History or using spell-check when producing a creative piece of writing for English.

    Resources

The main provision for ICT access in the Junior School is in a brand new, purpose built suite. All the terminals are linked to a central fileserver by Microsoft Windows 2000 Network and have access to the internet via a fast broadband connection. This access is filtered and all pupils are strictly supervised and instructed on how to use the facility responsibly and safely. A laser printer, colour ink jet printer and scanner are also available on the network. An overhead projector facility linked to the system laptop allows the teacher to guide the class through tasks step by step and provides visual demonstrations. There are 26 state of the art terminals to provide each boy with his own personal workstation. All members of the school have their own network account and password that enables them to store their files securely and centrally.
