  • Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Personal, Social and Health Education is a wide-reaching element of the school curriculum. The boys are encouraged to show respect for themselves and for others along with care and consideration for their environment.

    Co-ordinator: Mrs S A Faulkner MA

    Outline of work

We dedicate one lesson per week to this subject throughout the Junior School, although a great deal of what is learnt also occurs outside of the classroom, in the very ethos we promote.

Through our work in this area the boys gain the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives and to become active, informed and responsible citizens. They learn to take responsibility for their actions, to form fulfilling relationships, to understand the main social and political institutions that affect their lives and about their responsibilities, duties and rights as individuals and as members of the communities in which they live.

The boys learn to think for themselves and to draw on personal thoughts, feelings and experiences. Work in this subject takes a range of forms, including discussion, role-play and drama.

Citizenship and PSHE are taught throughout Key Stage 2 and cover a wide range of learning opportunities which reflect the needs of young people in their personal and social development. These include:

    • Sex and relationship education; drug, alcohol and tobacco education.
    • Improving confidence to lead a healthy and safe lifestyle.
    • Managing personal money.
    • Careers education.

    Resources

We use many different resources and media in the teaching of PHSE. We also invite outside speakers to come to school to deliver topics such as road safety.
