We see sport as something to be enjoyed by every boy. No matter what level the boys are at, they are accommodated in the school’s coaching structure in every sport.

    Outline of work

Games, Physical Education and Swimming are integral parts of the Junior School curriculum. Each week the boys have one Swimming lesson, one PE lesson and three lessons of Games.

In the Swimming lessons the boys use the school pool and are taught the four basic strokes, diving, water safety, life saving and survival techniques.

In the PE lessons the boys are taught by specialists in the Senior School sports hall. The curriculum involves ball skills, team games, gymnastics, athletics, mini basketball and short tennis.

Our major sports are football and cricket but the boys also do some hockey, rugby, cross- country, athletics, tennis and softball. When we teach the boys in the games lessons they are in small groups and do skill sessions and play small sided games, so that each boy is involved as much as possible. We encourage the boys to play fairly and to enjoy their sport.

During the year we have inter-school matches for football at Under 11, Under 10 and Under 9 levels. In cricket, cross-country and swimming we have teams at Under 11 and Under 10. We enter teams in the Association of Junior Independent Schools? and in the Bury Junior Schools? Sports Competitions.

We also have very strong House competitions in football, cross-country, swimming, athletics and cricket where we try to involve as many boys as possible.

    Resources

The Junior School has a large playground. We use the Senior School swimming pool, sports hall, playing fields, tennis courts and all-weather pitch.
