Outline of work
The key to the success of our scheme is simple. English is taught in action. Rather than being a stand-alone lesson, grammar and comprehension work are incorporated into the main body of teaching each week. This means that the boys can grasp concepts more easily as they can see them "in action" during the week.
In addition the subject is well differentiated, with an increasing focus on comprehension work as the boys progress, in order fully to prepare the boys for the Senior School entrance examination.
Running concurrently with the English Scheme of Work we also have a modern and highly successful Reading Scheme. This offers a range of fiction and non-fiction books which has proved very popular with the boys and has aided the improvement in their reading ages.
The Library
The Junior School library is a well stocked resource, easily accessible to all boys. The library is kept as up to date as possible, with new and best selling children's books being continuously added to the catalogue.
In Exitus (Year 6) both classes have a library lesson in which they are taught how to use a library, as well as encouraged to expand the breadth of their reading. The other classes have a lunchtime allocation supervised by a member of staff, allowing boys to change their library books and access information that can help with projects and homework, in a quiet, work orientated atmosphere.
