  • Beyond the curriculum

Our extensive extra-curricular provision reflects our belief in the importance of such activities for personal development and enrichment.

    Games

The major sports in the autumn and spring terms are Football and Rugby, while in the summer term the main sport is Cricket. Other sports which are played at inter-school level include Athletics, Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Hockey, Swimming and Tennis. Sports tours are arranged, most recently to Lake Garda.

    Music

Visiting peripatetic teachers support our own music staff in teaching individual boys and in running the wide range of extra-curricular Music, including Choir, Orchestra, Concert Band, Dance Orchestra and several Chamber groups. There are regular music tours both within the UK and abroad, most recently to Paris and to Edinburgh.

    Outdoor Education

Within days of arriving at the school all first formers spend three days at the National Water Sports Centre at Plas Menai in North Wales. Such activities help to nurture good relationships and a strong sense of belonging to a community.

    Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Boys may join the CCF in the third form. The contingent, which is affiliated to the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, has a distinguished record.

    Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Boys may begin working for their Bronze Award in the fourth form.

The school also participates in the following, usually with considerable distinction:

    • Model United Nations
    • The Sir Rhys Davies Mock Law Trial
    • The Cambridge Union Debate
    • The Ogden Trust National Schools’ Business Competition

Senior boys are encouraged to accept responsibility and to exercise leadership. Opportunities exist to serve as Prefects, as NCOs in the CCF, as team and house Captains and as members of Young Enterprise companies. These opportunities make a valuable contribution to the boys’ personal development.
