Physics is taught as a separate subject from the Third Form onwards. It is the fundamental science and a knowledge of just a few of the basic concepts sheds light on many aspects of modern life and is an enriching experience.

    Mr G Marshall (Laboratory Technician)

    Outline of work

Physics is studied to GCSE by all boys either as a separate science or as part of a science scheme. After GCSE the subject may be studied to AS level in the Sixth Form with most students continuing to A2 in the Seventh Form. The examination board for all of our courses is AQA. [ http://www.aqa.org ]

The courses up to GCSE cover the topics of electricity, forces, dynamics, energy, heat transfer and radioactivity. At A Level there is more emphasis on modern Physics - ie on the ideas that began to be accepted after 1900.

Although most boys studying Physics for AS and A2 also study Mathematics, this is not a requirement. The Physics Department offers a Maths course for non-mathematicians.

Resources and opportunities beyond the curriculum

The department has two well equipped laboratories with good IT facilities.

The school is affiliated to the Institute of Physics. [http:// www.iop.org ].

We encourage students to attend a wide variety of events outside school such as university conferences, awareness days, Headstart engineering courses and the Cambridge Physics scholars’ programme.

Each year many of our students go on to university to study pure sciences or an engineering discipline.
