Biology is an ever changing subject. Recent advances in DNA technology and molecular science have transformed the way we think. The department believes in the educational value of Biology over and above its value as a preparation for a career. Our aim is to make our students aware of the exciting possibilities and send them out well qualified, informed and enthusiastic about Biology.

    Staff

Mr G A Ferguson BSc (Head of Department)
    Mrs A C Gill BSc
    Mr A D Watts BSc
    Mrs E Grierson (Laboratory Technician)

    Outline of work

Biology is taught as a separate subject to all boys.  In the lower school the emphasis is on stimulating a permanent interest in the living world and the acquisition of the essential practical skills that will form a solid foundation for the GCSE course. Biology is presented as a developing science with important applications in social, technological and environmental areas.

The AQA GCSE course begins in the Third Form. This provides a sound basis for progression throughout the course, with the content examined by modular examinations.

The AS and A2 courses (AQA Specification) are also taught on a modular basis, with practical assessments being taken at two intervals throughout the course.

    Resources

There are two specialised laboratories in the Department offering excellent facilities for developing theoretical and practical skills.
