Physical Education and Games at Bury Grammar School Boys aims to develop each boy’s physical ability, level of skill and health. We want our pupils to enjoy sport and to perform to the best of their ability. We actively promote good sporting attitudes, teamwork, tolerance and respect for self and others. Each boy is encouraged to realise his full potential.

    Aims

The emphasis placed on Physical Education and Games provides a basis for us to deliver a broad, balanced and differentiated Physical Education programme that helps us to fulfil the following aims:

    • To promote physical activity, physical development and a healthy lifestyle.
    • To develop social co-operation and positive attitudes and to compete with a sense of fair play.
    • To promote and develop safe practice in physical activities.
    • To provide equal opportunities for all boys regardless of race, gender, background or ability.
    • To provide opportunities for all boys to achieve their potential.

    Outline of work

The department’s work may be divided into three main areas. Games are compulsory for all boys in all year groups, and PE is compulsory until the end of the Fifth Form. GCSE Physical Education is taught as a one year course in the Fifth Form. All boys are encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities. Sport is for all at BGSB and, while several teams in different sports compete at the highest level (and often with considerable success), all teams and boys are of equal importance.

    Resources

The school has excellent facilities. These include: a sports hall, a weights room, a swimming pool, a flood-lit Astroturf, eight tennis courts and extensive playing fields.
