Sport

Sport

We see sport as something to be enjoyed by every boy. No matter what level the boys are at, they are accommodated in the school’s coaching structure in every sport. Mr Williams, Director of Sport oversees Sport and PE for all boys, aged 7 – 18 at Bury Grammar School Boys.

Outline of Work

Games, Physical Education and Swimming are integral parts of the Junior School curriculum. Each week the boys have one Swimming lesson, one PE lesson and three lessons of Games.

In Swimming lessons the boys use the school pool and are taught the four basic strokes, diving, water safety, life saving and survival techniques. In the spring term they have the chance to achieve a swimming award.

In PE lessons the boys are taught by specialists in the Senior School sports hall. The curriculum involves ball skills, team games, gymnastics, indoor athletics and short tennis.

Our major competitive sports are football and cricket but the boys are also taught/coached in the areas of hockey, tag rugby, cross-country, athletics, tennis and softball/rounders. When we teach the boys in the games lessons they are in small groups and participate in skill sessions and play small sided games, so that each boy is involved as much as possible. We encourage the boys to play fairly and respectfully and to enjoy their wide variety of sport.

During the year we have inter-school matches for football at Under 11, Under 10 and Under 9 levels. In cricket, cross-country and swimming we have teams at Under 11 and Under 10. We enter teams in the Association of Junior Independent Schools and in the Bury Junior Schools Sports Competitions.

We also have very strong House competitions in football, cross-country, swimming, athletics and cricket where we involve as many boys as possible.

Resources

The Junior School has a large playground. We use the Senior School swimming pool, sports hall, playing fields, tennis courts and all-weather pitch.
