We believe it is vital that the boys are interested in and enthusiastic about Reading and Writing. With this in mind we have created an English scheme of work that is specifically boy-orientated. Taking the best elements of the Primary Framework for Literacy as a basis, the boys are offered a modern, accessible and effective English education.
Outline of Work
The key to our success is simple. English is taught in action. Rather than just being a stand-alone lesson, grammar is incorporated into writing through the week and comprehension texts are linked into the topics. Boys consolidate their literacy skills across the curriculum.
Boys are encouraged to develop their reading, comprehension and writing by being involved in assessment and individual target-setting.
The subject is well differentiated to ensure that all boys progress fully and are prepared for the Senior School entrance examination. They are also encouraged to enter National Poetry and Writing competitions.
Running concurrently with the English scheme of work we have a modern and highly successful reading scheme. Boys progress through the popular scheme of fiction and non-fiction titles, whilst also reading a book of their choice.
Through a variety of opportunities such as drama, assemblies and an annual verse-speaking competition, boys develop confidence when speaking to an audience and become considerate listeners.
We use modern, up-to-date and boy-friendly text books and reading books to enhance teaching and learning. Boys have access to a wide-range of interactive resources and are encouraged to use ICT to further their literacy skills. There are regular visits from authors, poets and storytellers.
