Admissions Policy

The school maintains an admissions policy for all phases of entry. Admission at 3 – 7 years into the Infant School is for girls and boys on an equal basis. From 7 years of age, admission to BGSB is for boys only. Admission is open equally to pupils from all racial and cultural groups. Admission to the school is based upon the suitability of the pupil to the academic education offered by the school as determined by the tests outlined in the school’s admissions procedures. In addition to academic ability, consideration is given to the standard of behaviour and self-discipline displayed by the pupil in our observations of them and as detailed in the reference from the pupil’s current school. At BGSB we strive to achieve a calm and orderly environment where pupils learn well and thrive.

Pupils are not normally accepted to the school whose needs are such that they would require a formal statement of special educational needs in the maintained sector: pupils need to be able to follow the normal curriculum with only a small amount of support. Every case is considered on its merits and the school will discuss the extent to which it can accommodate and provide for those needs, possibly with a contribution from parents in respect of additional costs incurred.

JUNIOR SCHOOL (7 – 11 years)

Boys can be considered for entry in each of the four years (i.e. 7+, 8+, 9+, 10+), though the principal age of entry is 7+. Boys are invited for an assessment in school which will include standardised tests in reading and mathematics appropriate to his National Curriculum year group (ie Year 3, 4, 5 or 6). The visit will also include a short, informal interview with a senior member of staff to explore boys’ interests, attitudes to school and personal qualities. We will seek a reference from the Head of the boy’s present school. Offers of places are made to successful candidates shortly after their visit.

At 11+ boys are entitled to sit the Senior School Entrance Examination. Transfer to the Senior School is not automatic at this stage, though in practice the overwhelming majority of pupils pass.
