Life in Nursery and Pre school

resizedimage250187-WoodThe Nursery and Pre School day is based upon activities which allow children to formulate their own ideas about the world. We use a ‘natural calendar’ to link topics which are covered throughout the year and we seek to develop children’s interests in these areas. Topics studied are specifically tailored so children gain an understanding of and enjoy the culture in which we live. Whilst some topics are prescribed, most depend on the interests the children reveal. The ethnic and religious diversity of the Nursery and Pre School and the community will be considered as the prescribed topics are selected to ensure that each group of children enjoys input that is important to their culture.

Indoor and outdoor play is encouraged as a vital part of your child’s development. We seek to help your child gain a sense of self and of the world around them through participation in charity work. The children help to raise money for a wide variety of charities through pyjama days, non-uniform days and a sponsored toddle.

In the Nursery and Pre School there are five members of staff. All children are assigned to one nursery nurse who will be their key worker throughout the year. Most of the children’s activities take place in the Pre School building but during the week we use the Infant gym for our PE lessons.

A Day in the Infants

Our day begins at 8.45 am but the doors open at 8.15am. For the early birds, there is a Breakfast Club from 7.30am onwards. The children are taken to their classrooms at 8.30am to organise themselves and their belongings for the day ahead. This will involve emptying their school bag and giving in their Message Folders; these are part of our communication with parents. We believe that communication between the parents and the school is crucial for your child’s development We have an assembly at 8.50am. each day, sometimes with the Junior Girls, and on Fridays each class takes the assembly on a rota. Parents are invited to these assemblies.

Lessons begin at 9.05am and mathematics and English form the majority of morning lessons. However, the children enjoy a wide curriculum and have the opportunity to experience many subjects. The Year 1 and 2 children play on our large playground at 10.15am along with the Junior Girls whilst Reception and Nursery children have access to their own purpose built area. During playtime, a range of toys are available as well as our activity trail.

Lessons continue at 10.35 until 11.45am when Year 1 and 2 go to the Dining Room to enjoy their lunch. All food is cooked on the premises to a high standard and the children have a healthy choice. Those preferring to bring a packed lunch from home may do so. The Reception and Nursery children have their lunch in the Sunshine room within the Nursery setting but have the same food options as their older peers.

Wrap Around Care

We believe that communication between the parents and the school is crucial for your child’s development. We aim to keep you updated on your child’s progress at every available opportunity and we aim to provide the best Wrap Around Care possible.

We understand the pressures upon working parents and so Bury Grammar offers a fully supervised Breakfast Club from 7.30am in the morning, where children may have their breakfast with their friends before the day at school begins.

There is also an After School Club which runs from the end of the school day until 5.45pm, where children are given a snack and drink before they participate in both indoor and outdoor activities with their friends, supervisors and some friendly sixth-formers.

The school employs a fully qualified nurse who is on-site to deal with any accidents or emergencies that may take place. Most members of staff are first-aiders.

We also provide quality care in the holidays through staff led clubs. These run from 8am to 5pm and organised by our fully qualified staff. The children enjoy a range of creative, physical and musical activities as well as the chance to socialise with friends.
