Beyond the Curriculum
Our extensive extra-curricular and co-curricular provision includes a wide range of clubs and societies. This reflects our belief in the importance of such activities for personal enrichment and development. For full details, see the Extra-Curricular section of our website.
Games
The major sports in the autumn and spring terms are Football and Rugby, while in the summer term the main sport is Cricket. Other sports played at inter-school level include Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Hockey, Swimming and Tennis. There are regular sports tours, both within the UK and overseas.
Music
Visiting peripatetic teachers support our own music staff in teaching individual boys and in running the wide range of extra-curricular music, including choir, orchestra, concert band, dance orchestra and several chamber groups. There are regular music tours both within the UK and abroad.
Outdoor Pursuits
Within days of arriving at the school all first formers spend three days at the National Water Sports Centre at Plas Menai in North Wales. Outdoor activities for senior boys include climbing, kayaking, dry-slope skiing and mountain biking.
Other Activities
The school's Combined Cadet Force, affiliated to the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, is one of the oldest in the country and boys may join the contingent in the third form. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is offered to boys from the fourth form. There is a major World Challenge Expedition every two years, with a smaller expedition during the intervening year. The school also participates in the Model United Nations, the Sir Rhys Davies Mock Law Trial, the Cambridge Union Debate, the Schools' Challenge General Knowledge Quiz and in many national competitions related to particular curriculum subjects.
